The US Open – America’s Open Championship…

The US Open
USGA Open Trophy on 18th Fairway at Merion Golf Club. 2013

The US Open of the United States Open Championship is one of golfs four majors played annually. It is usually played second to The Masters somewhere around mid June in the US.  Unlike The Masters, The US Open host course changes every single year.  The courses are generally set up to be devilishly difficult with long set ups & thick rough.  Lightning fast greens and unforgiving hazards are also a common theme in the US Open.  Great examples of these characteristics include the undulating greens of Pinehurst No. 2 (Host in 1999, 2005, &2014) and Oakmont’s punishing rough (2015).

Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus hold the record for the most U.S. Open victories, with four victories each. Hale Irwin is the oldest winner of the U.S. Open at 45 years and 15 days in 1990. The youngest winner of the U.S. Open is John McDermott at 19 years, 10 months and 14 days in 1911.
