1982: Sam Snead & Don January win Legends of Golf Tournament with a record breaking finish


Snead, January…Take Legends Golf

On this day, In 1982 Sam Snead and Don January won the Legends of Golf Tournament at Onion Creek CC in Austin, TX. Snead and January took the $100,000 first-place prize by 12 strokes – ending two years of frustration in which they had faded on the final round.

”We teamed better than any I’ve ever played with,” said Snead, after the duo shot a nine-under-par 61 to shatter the scoring record. ”Sam just played absolutely super,” said January. ”It was a pleasure to watch him.”

With Snead, 69 years old, matching the 52-year-old January birdie-for-birdie over Onion Creek layout, the duo posted a 54-hole total of 183 that broke the record of 187 set by Tommy Bolt and Art Wall.  The defending champions, Gene Littler and Bob Rosburg, shot 23-under best-ball in winning the tournament over 72 holes in 1981.
