
On this day, in 1968 Billy Casper wins the Southern California Open by three strokes
Billy Casper shot a three under par 69 yesterday and posted a three round total of 208 to win the Southern California Open golf tournament by three strokes. The second day leader, Al Johnston of West Palm Beach, Fla. had a 73 and tied for second with Howie Johnson of St. Paul, who carded a 69.
Casper jumped into the lead quickly yesterday, shooting a birdie on the first hole to tie with Johnston, getting another birdie on the third and then shooting par for two holes while Johnston had a par and a bogey. In his first competitive action in more than a month, Casper took home first prize $6,000 in the $31,000 event. Johnson and Johnston each received $2,500 for their tie in second. Behind them was Alex Sutton in fourth with $1,250 and Lee Elder in 5th with $1,000.
