51 years ago today, Mickey Wright edged Carol Mann for the first Ladies’s World Series of Golf
By: Josh Morris– It was on this day fifty-one years ago when female golf pioneer Mickey Wright won the first Women’s World Series of Golf at Springfield Country Club in Ohio. With that she was also handed the largest check in history by collecting $10,000. Just for comparison, before that the largest purse was played over an event in Toledo earlier that year at the Glass City Classic–the prize was only $3,750. She won the prize by completing a testing 36 hole two day event and by edging Carol Mann by one stroke. It wasn’t all bad for Mann although, as she came away $7,500 second money. Wright shot an eight-under-par 69-67 – 136 and during the second day she one putted seven greens.
