On this day, Belleville, Illinois native Bob Goalby incredibly birdied eight holes in a row.  He did it during the final round of the annual St. Petersburg Open played at Pasadena Country Club.  Goalby was in complete control of the tournament even before the birdie train.  Just in the second round he masterfully navigated the Pasadena layout to shoot a 62.  During the first and third rounds he turned in a 67 each day before his final round of 65.  He finished with an aggregate score of 261 which was the lowest score in a 72 hole event since Bill Johnston won the Salt Lake Open with a 260.

Goalby’s record stood for nearly 50 years before Mark Calcavecchia reeled off nine birdies in a row at the 2009 RBC Canadian Open (second round, 65)  Calcavecchia began his second round on the 10th hole. His birdie streak began on the par-3 No.12 hole, continued on holes 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, then carried over to holes 1 and 2. The final birdie in his streak was on the par-5 second hole. The streak ended with a par on the No. 3 hole.  Calcavecchia shot a round of 65 that day. He finished the tournament in a tie for eighth place…
