This Day in Hogan history: Ben plays with the Belgium

By: Mark Baron

On May 17, 1959 Ben Hogan played a round of golf with the King of Belgium, Baldwin Albert Charles Leopold Axel Maria Gustaf, generally known as King Baudouin, at the Shady Oaks Country Club in Ft. Worth Texas. The King who was number 2 man on the Belgium’s International Golf Team, was in Washington for a state visit, but wanted to visit Texas. The match was not on the King’s official itinerary but in the days just prior to his visit, word leaked that it was suspected his main reason for going to Texas was to have the opportunity to play a round with Mr. Hogan. All Ben would say is that “I don’t know about the match and I wouldn’t tell if I did”.
