On this day, In 1928 Betsy Rawls was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  Over an illustrious playing career Rawls acquired 55 LPGA wins with eight major championships which includes four Women’s U.S. Open titles. Although a native of South Carolina, Rawls enjoyed amateur fame growing up in Texas. She won the 1949 Texas Amateur just four years after taking up the game and repeated that triumph in 1950.

The 1959 LPGA season was easily her best, winning 10 events out of 29, including 2 majors.  That year she was also the money leader with $26,774 and earned the LPGA Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average. Rawls led the LPGA Tour in wins on three different occasions over the course of her career (1952, 1957, 1959).  After she retired from playing she stayed active in the game & became President of the Ladies Professional Golf Association from 1961-1962.  In 1975 she became the tournament director of the LPGA.  In 1996, she was voted the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf.
