On this day, In 1926 Walter Hagen beats Leo Diegel 5 & 3 to win his 3rd consecutive PGA Championship, 4th overall

Walter Hagen

Walter Hagen made golf history on this day becoming the first man to win three PGA Championships

Walter Hagen proved on this day that even in a hectic year of sports it is possible for a champion to regain his title.  Hagen won the professional golfers championship for the third successive year, by beating Leo Diegel over the beautiful Salisbury course, four up and three to play.  Hagen took the lead at the second hole of the 36 hole match and never looked back.  He was 2 up at the morning round, keeping this margin to the twenty-seventh and got one more on Diegel on the twenty-eighth.  It was necessary for the champion to shoot better than par as Diegel kept in hot pursuit of Hagen for most of the day.
